I’ve always hated how people would always say you should only work at a job you love, because the chances of me finding a job I love is about as high as winning the lottery. For those of you who love what you do, consider yourselves blessed. Unfortunately, the rest of us need to make sacrifices doing what we don’t necessarily enjoy in order to live our lifestyles, but sometimes we might be sacrificing just a bit too much. Knowing when to say enough is enough is just as important to your career as finding the right job and it can be useful to recognize the signs that your job just isn’t for you.
So how do you know if you should dig up the resume and start finding a better opportunity elsewhere and that you’re not just simply having a bad day at the office? Yahoo!’s HotJobs.com has a useful article that gives ten signals that your job is not for you. Now having these “work symptoms” doesn’t necessarily mean you should pack up and quit. You have to decide if you’re willing to sacrifice your time for this job and you have to weigh the pros and cons. If the cons surpass the pros and you feel you can find a better job elsewhere, then by all means, start fixing up your resume and brushing up your interviewing skills because it’s simply not worth staying.
Personally, if I wake up in the mornings and that dreadful feeling of going to work fills my mind, that’s when I know it’s time to do something about it. I want a career that is meaningful and something that I appreciate and have pride in, not just a job that pays the rent. However, there are a lot of other factors that determine quitting your job, such as family responsibilities and debt, which makes this decision a lot more complicated.
